Chapter Ten

Dale was thinking about packing away his tools when he spotted Marcus leading Zac into the grounds. He tracked them for a while trying to ignore the uncomfortable knot in his stomach. Marcus had every right to put a collar and leash on Zac, but Dale had to resist the urge to run after them and take possession of the strip of leather. Collars were important, not to be taken lightly. Zac seemed to be doing a decent job of walking at heel, his gaze fixed on Marcus’ shoulder. They were talking, and Zac seemed relaxed.

“None of my business,” Dale muttered, not for the first time. He put his grumpy reaction down to being tired. He needed to sleep before taking another nightshift but first he had to pack everything away then go and see Luke. He cleaned off the tools he’d used then stowed them in the shed. As he made his way around the building toward the front door, a slight buzzing caught his attention and he swatted at his face in case he was the intended target of a hungry mosquito. Despite his flapping the buzzing continued, getting slightly louder. He looked around for the source of the noise and caught sight of something in the sky above him. Taking care not to make it obvious he’d spotted it, he bent to lace his boot. He fiddled around as long as he dared, watching what he now recognized as a drone out of the corner of his eye. The machine was quite high, and as Dale stood, it flew in the direction Marcus and Zac had walked.

Dale debated whether or not to go after them but decided against it. If he alerted them to the drone, he would also be alerting its operator. Marcus wouldn’t take Zac outside the grounds, so he was safe enough for the moment.

Dale went around to the front of the property. He took off his muddy boots, leaving them inside the door before heading for Luke’s office. He gave the door a tap and it swung open.

Luke put down his pen. “Come on in, Dale. Would you like a cup of coffee?”

“That would be great, if you have any decaf. I can’t believe I’m saying that, but I need to grab a few hours’ sleep if I’m going to stay awake again tonight. I need to save the caffeine for later.”

Luke pressed some buttons on his desk phone and connected to the kitchen where he ordered coffee from Rayne, who promised to bring it straight away.

“Tor told me you’re making great progress on extending the garden, but I guess that’s not what you’re here to talk about,” Luke said.

“And you’d be right. There are a few things I need to tell you. Actually, I was wondering if you’d want Tor to be in on this conversation as well. Sorry, I should have said something before. I’m tired and not thinking straight.” Luke picked up the phone again and asked Rayne to get Tor to bring the coffee because he needed a word.
